The Tropilaelaps advisory leaflet has been updated. This leaflet explains the biology, distribution, and risks of Tropilaelaps mites; invasive brood parasites of honey bees that are now spreading toward Europe. The leaflet outlines their life cycle, harmful effects on colonies, potential pathways for introduction into the UK, and the legal responsibilities of beekeepers to prevent and report infestations. This leaflet also provides guidance on monitoring methods, contingency planning, and resources for support and compliance with UK import legislation.
Tropilaelaps monitoring advisory note: The use of waxing strips to uncap brood cells for inspection of Tropilaelaps has been widely promoted. However, the updated booklet does not contain this method. The NBU cannot endorse this practice because it is currently being reviewed by the FSA for its potential impact on food safety. Please refrain from using this technique until further guidance is issued.
